What Is An SR-22?
No driver is perfect, but if you begin to rack up multiple or severe traffic offenses, then you will face the consequences, one of which is the SR-22 insurance requirement.
An SR-22 policy is one that is designed specifically for drivers who have been deemed high-risk operators by the Florida DMV. These drivers will be required to carry higher auto insurance limits compared to non-SR-22 drivers, and the SR-22 policy is used to both provide these benefits and ensure that the policyholder continues to maintain coverage.
Who Needs an SR-22 Policy?
Only Florida drivers who are deemed high-risk operators by the authorities must obtain an SR-22 policy. These might include those who:
Operate without valid auto insurance
Operate without a valid license
Commit multiple driving infractions
Cause at-fault accidents
You will have to maintain the SR-22 policy for three years, and you must maintain continuous coverage for the entire penalty period. Failing to do so will result in further penalties.
Please Note: Drivers convicted of DUI offenses will be required to obtain an FR-44 insurance policy. Click here to learn more.
How Does an SR-22 Work?
The average Florida driver is required to only carry two auto insurance benefits: $10,000 PIP Insurance and $10,000 Property Damage Liability Insurance.
However, SR-22 recipients are required to carry different benefits of at least:
• $10,000 Bodily Injury Liability Coverage per person
• $20,000 Bodily Injury Liability Coverage per accident
• $10,000 Property Damage Liability Coverage
Policies can be augmented with other benefits like collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist benefits to the policyholder’s advantage.
There are two primary types of SR-22 policies: owner and non-owner coverage. If you own your own vehicle, then you need the former, while you only need the latter benefit if you drive others’ vehicles.
Getting Your SR-22
With the help of your Foxx Insurance agent, you are guaranteed that you’ll get the SR-22 benefits that are perfect for you. Keep in mind:
Being the owner of a vehicle does not mean it is paid off. Even if you are financing a vehicle, you are the owner, so you will need an SR-22 owner’s policy.
Having a own non-owner SR-22 does not mean that the owner doesn’t need their own benefits.
There are some situations that owners can get a non-owner policy and save a ton of money. Some customers have even saved $3,000+ a year or more just by calling us.
Our carrier partners offer payment plan options on both owner and non-owner SR-22 policies. You may not have to pay in full for a 6 month or 12-month policy term, depending on what works for you.
Yes, getting an SR-22 might seem like a hassle, but with us it doesn’t have to be. We are partnered with trusted, customer-focused carriers, and we’ll be able to comprehensively compare the policies within our network to find the one that offers you the best coverage at the right prices.
